KIYOKO KASHIWAGI


Born in Japan, Kiyoko began her dance training at the age of five. After she moved to New York in 1993, she received a scholarship from the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio, and learned dance composition from Doris Rudko.

Since 1997, she has worked under the name of Anime Dance Theater, and her original choreographic works have been presented by HERE Arts Center, The Chocolate Factory, Dixon Place, Children's Museum of Manhattan, Queens Museum of Art, Aaron Davis Hall, Joyce SoHo, Movement Research at Judson Church, New York International Fringe Festival, Galapagos, Lexington Center for the Arts, Chashama, and others. Kashiwagi has received funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Greater New York Arts Development Fund, the Puffin Foundation, Urban Artist Initiative/NYC, Meet the composer, and has been selected as an Artist-in-Residence at Queens Museum of Art, Movement Research, Lexington Center for the Arts, and Artward Bound at White Oak.

She is also a founding member of Ex.Pgirl, a physical theater group, which participated in HERE-Artist-Residency-Program (HARP). As a dancer, she has performed for Karole Armitage, David Salle, Yoshiko Chuma, Yasuko Yokoshi, Maureen Fleming, Ellen Cornfield, Nami Yamamoto, Kevin Augustine, Ken Nintzel, Matthew Nash, to name a few.
